New York- New Jersey Trail Conference Headquarters
Mahwah, New Jersey

The New York New Jersey Trail Conference is one of the foremost environmental organizations in the Northeast. We were asked to design a state-of-the-art headquarters building for their growing staff and programs, located on the edge of the Ramapo Mountain Reservation. The design included exterior restoration of the Darlington Schoolhouse, built in 1891 in the Shingle Style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project brief also required a large addition that would blend harmoniously with the Schoolhouse building and pass muster with the New Jersey Trust for Historic Preservation. Offices, conference rooms, mapping facilities, accessible bathrooms and a book store were fit into the combined old and new space. The heating and cooling of the building is provided by an advanced geothermal system. Since its completion, the building has garnered historic preservation awards from the Town of Mahwah, Bergen County and the State of New Jersey.
