Biology Building
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Walter Aurell with Goody Clancy Architects

The 252,000 square foot Biology Building houses the Department’s laboratories, seminar rooms, lecture halls and faculty offices. Walter was the lead design architect of the building’s interiors, including material selection, lighting, furniture design and the two six-story atria and stairs that connect to seminar rooms and lounges known as “tea rooms” at MIT. The light filled atrium spaces and stairs were designed to foster the impromptu encounters between scientists and the collaborative atmosphere that is a vital part of Institute culture.
